Communications Data Technician

Job Description

The Data Technician is responsible for undertaking the installation and maintenance of Telecommunications / Data Cabling related projects and customer services within the Communications Department of Aotea Electric Southern Ltd. The Data Technician is responsible for preparation, planning, compliance, quality control and communication, (both internal and external) for daily activities ensuring an efficient and effective process, as required.

Main Objectives

1. To work closely with the Communications Supervisor(s), ensuring projects, maintenance and future opportunities are carried out and or identified as effectively and efficiently as possible

2. To develop rapport with existing and new clients and seek prospective projects and opportunities

3. To develop and maintain professional relationships with trades staff and other contractors (both internal and external)

4. Ensure all work is undertaken to a high standard, compliant, safe, effective, and efficient operation

5. To report regularly to the Communications Management Team and Supervisor on progress, in particular achievement against milestones, potential risks and opportunities

Relationships

Reports to: Communications Supervisor(s) – Aotea Electric Southern Ltd 
Supervision of: Assigned electrical and non-electrical staff as required
Internal Relationships:  CEO, Aotea Group Holdings Ltd, General Manager, All Other Aotea Electric Southern Ltd Management and Staff  
External Relationships: Other Aotea companies, Clients/Customers, External Consultants,   Inspectors, Suppliers, and Wholesalers

Key Tasks/Accountabilities

  • Accountability to Communications Supervisor(s) on all project/maintenance performance
  • Abiding by all policies and procedures of Aotea Electric Southern Ltd
  • Effective supervision of allocated Staff and workloads
  • Regular reporting to Communications Supervisor(s) on project/maintenance and Staff performance and outcomes
  • Effective material purchasing based on actual requirements
  • Complete As-Built manuals as per contract documentation
  • Maintaining and enhancing customer relationships
  • Developing new customers
  • Working alongside separate departments in a team environment
  • Ensuring stock levels are kept to a minimum
  • Quality Control as required
  • Attendance at H&S Toolbox Meetings scheduled by the Communications Supervisor(s)/ManagerResponsible for accurate labour requirements on current projects
  • Responsible for on-the-job training of lesser experienced Communications Staff within Aotea Electric Southern Ltdo Responsible for H&S, all timesheets and time keeping of Staff allocated to your control
  • Work with suppliers to ensure the very best deal/pricing can be obtained and investigate possible alternative solutions resulting in potential savings
  • Health and Safety
  • Ensuring Health and Safety is carried out as per the Aotea Electric Southern Health and Safety Policy for all work you are associated with and your Aotea Staff and sub-contractors
  • Ensuring all Aotea Staff and sub-contractors for all work you are associated with are complicit with specific site Health and Safety requirements
  • Ensuring all Plant is compliant with Health and Safety guidelines
  • Carry out team meetings, assessments, and training as required to demonstrate best practices to all Staff and sub-contractors
  • Ensure H&S audits are being completed and submitted

Financial

  • Be aware of the financial objectives of all work. (i.e. hours, materials, timeframes, market conditions) and ensure efficiencies and performance is managed accordingly to maximise returns

  • Assist with the identification of variations and processing throughout the duration of projects in conjunction with the Supervisor and Communications Senior Management Team ensuring a timely manner following approved processes

Work Experience/Qualifications

  • Minimum of two (2) years experience (preferred but not essential)
  • New Zealand Electrical Registration (preferred but not essential)
  • CommScope, Siemon, Schneider (Actassi), Legrand or similar Accreditation in Copper• CommScope, Schneider (Actassi), Emtelle or similar Accreditation in Fibre (preferred but not essential)
  • Air Blown Fibre (ABF) experience (preferred but not essential)
  • MOE ICT Cabling Accreditation (preferred but not essential)
  • Fluke Testers experience (Copper and or Fibre) (preferred but not essential)
  • OTDR experience (preferred but not essential)
  • Understanding of Basic ICT Hardware, WiFi and Telephony components (preferred but not essential)
  • Attention to detail and the ability to read building plans and technical drawings are essential
  • NZ Drivers License
  • New Zealand Resident or currently holds a New Zealand Work Visa
